Aesthetics and Dental Health
Health should come first but all dental treatments should have aesthetic results,
restore the original form of the tooth and blend with the rest of the dentition.
Occasionally improvement may be achieved when repairing a single tooth either in closing gaps or bringing it into better alignment.
Health – Decay/Caries and Gum Disease
• Gum Disease
Gum disease affects us all and results in loss of the support from the tooth in the bone –
we become ‘longer in the tooth’ and eventually the teeth may become loose and lost.
In the meantime we will be afflicted by bad breath
• Decay
- Decay : Sugar is the enemy
- Sugar is natural but not in the concentration we experience in refined sugar ( this includes honey, treacle, maple syrup )
- All teeth will be affected by sugar to a greater or lesser extent according to certain predisposing factors
- If you perceive that you have good teeth, you still NEED a dentist
- You will still suffer from gum disease and probably wear and attrition
- Tooth wear is insidious and quickly becoming a plague especially in generation X:Y

The greatest advance in dental treatment has been patient education and the dialogue with dental professionals.
Dental treatment requires active patient participation.
Continually repairing self inflicted damage is only supervising neglect, the patient needs to maintain the improvements between dental visits.
This requires knowledge.
8. Surgery
